Random Thoughts

I've had a busy and stressful week and my brain is pretty fried. This is what I'm thinking in my head today....

1. I really like the foamy soap that comes in a pump. WAY better than the liquid soap. That stuff tends to pool under the dispenser and make a gloppy, soapy mess on the counter. The foam just goes right where you want it and is so much easier to use. Two thumbs up!

2. I know the organizing "experts" say you should dispose of all your junk mail the minute you bring it into the house from your mailbox. But what about recycling? I am obsessed with recycling. And you can't just toss most of that junk mail in your paper recycling bin for a few reasons. First, most of those envelopes have plastic windows and you can't recycle paper with plastic. Second, some of that mail has private information you don't want to make available to those identity thieves that are rifling through all your trash. So, you really do have to OPEN the damn junk mail to deal with these sticky situations. You have to rip apart the envelope to get the plastic off, and then throw the paper parts in the recycling bin. Then you have to separate out the personal information so you can put that in the shredder. Oh! And you can't just put an envelope with plastic windows straight into your shredder for future recycling, because, again, there is the plastic issue.

So see? All you organizational "experts" are just wrong on this one. It's much more complicated than that.

3. Why am I getting mail from the local funeral home? I'm staring to get concerned.

4. Send us your tips!  Why do women's magazines pay someone money to give us stupid advice like, "Have your kids set out their backpacks the night before, so they won't have to rush in the morning." Really? Someone got paid $100 for this tip?

5. I stayed in my bathrobe today until 2:30 p.m.

  2. Hey,how do I get that gig, MA? I have a great tip: Buy toilet paper every time you go to the store so you never run out.

This one's for free, but the next will cost ya.

  3. So glad you believe in recycling all of those coupons because you know someone on Extreme Couponing is going to be going through your trash to cut those babies out!!!

Also...team foam soap - I love that stuff and foam soap has such a good rhyme to it.

  4. Ha! Stacey, when my kids were little yes, yes I did. I didn't need someone else to tell me that though. I thought of it all by myself! :-)) Julie, you should sell that tip! I'm sure no one else thought of that. :-) Cassie, we ARE team foam soap. Seriously, those extreme couponers go through people's trash? That's an illness.

  7. I'm a teacher, write, play my guitar and sing. Do you write your own music? I started 10 years ago and it is great fun. I see your frustrations with recycling.

  8. We're getting ads from funeral homes and cremation plans too. I wonder if they know something I don't.

  9. This post really hits home, especially two things: 1) junk mail is one of the the major annoyances of my existence, so insidious I hardly think of it but do feel the irritation. Your post brought it into my awareness. What to do except endure? Writing all the senders to tell them not to send it anymore seems more trouble than it's worth....unless...I could work these letters into blogs posts....hmmmm. 2)Women's magazines. I've looked at them to see if I might like to submit an article but most of the "information" in there is so shallow and dumb I don't want to. Think I'll aim for more like Atlantic Monthly (I can dream!).

  10. Oh my gosh, Michael Ann, I love this! Sometimes our random thoughts are the best posts! I agree, the junk mail thing is so annoying. And I do not know what you're getting brochures from the funeral home, but that's not a good sign. Also, I didn't know these people got paid to say stupid shit in magazines! I just thought they wanted a millisecond of something resembling fame. My God.

  11. Michael Ann, first of all, I love that you stayed in your bathrobe until the early afternoon and second, I love this post! I agree with everything you mentioned--especially the foam soap. Once you try foam, it's over for the old retro soapy kind! My only gripe is that it finishes so much quicker!

  12. Oh girl, you had me laughing at the foamy soap. That is so true. There is something "magical" about foamy soap. Just puts a girl in a good mood!

  14. I don't remember which companies sent us "death stuff" but we've had at least three mailings in the past month...even worse when I get one and Walt gets on in a separate mailing!

  16. Hah, love the list. I feel like I constantly have a list like that going through my brain....which sometimes makes me forgot the important things I need to do. My husband is also obsessed with foam soap. He doesn't usually have much of an opinion on household goods but that is one if he firm on - FOAM SOAP ONLY. I don't get the charm, but it works the same, so I buy it.

  19. Here is the tip for you, send all junk mail back to the sender. I did it once and I never heard from them again :)

  20. I think, being organized is something that is passed down the gnomes. Some prefer the clutter and piles, and looking endlessly for their keys or sunglasses. The organizer charging 100 dollars for the tip are selling their own common sense (so it seems to me) and there are some that truly need the extra help organizing their lives. I think sometimes ( and this is going to get me all kinds of stink) but I would like a wife (not being mean) but I mean the woman who manages all the stuff.. I never knew about throwing junk mail away but it's something I do before I even walk in the door... I don't read it.

  21. Lol. this post made my day. I feel ya! I get all kinds of junk mail like electric scooters, wigs, life insurance but the funeral home tops that all the way! Wow.

  22. 100 bucks for a tip? You could've sent one in while in your robe all day.

  23. I found this post through the "others you might like" link on the bottom of another of your posts. You have some good points, especially about the junk mail and the tips in the magazines. I have to wonder sometimes about all these "tips" we are given. Do some of these people live in the same world we do? Oh, I would be concerned about the mail from the funeral home, too! ;-)
